The Garden of Earthly Delights
by Hieronymus BoschBosch, a renowned Northern Renaissance artist, is known for his abstract and imaginative paintings.
The Garden of Earthly delights is triptych. It depicts paradise with Adam and Eve and many wondrous animals on the left panel. The earthly delights contains many figures and tremendous food and bird. The right panel depicts hell and the “fantastic” punishments that sinners have to go through.
He uses traditional Flemish styles - it is relatively flat, with a slightly awkward perspective, the colors are contrasted, and he provides very detailed…details, for the lack of a better word. He also uses a lot of imagery, which was common amongst Northern Renaissance artists - painters of the international style.
I personally love this painting due to the brilliant colors but also because of how happy it looks…until you look at the details of what the people are doing. He introduces religions imagery in a relatively fantastical way.
